Foundations of Education I

June 16th - June 20th - 9:00am-3:00pm

This course is designed to help teachers improve their effectiveness. All the resources used in the course originated on sound research basis. The information presented in the course was collected from leading researchers in the field and provides “best practice” in a wide variety of classroom management and instructional strategies. The research used in the course is validated every two years to be certain that it is still viable.

School, Family & Community

June 23rd - June 27th - 9:00am-3:00pm

The research evidence is clear: parent and family involvement is critical to student achievement.  Studies conducted over many years show a clear correlation between parent involvement and student achievement, with benefits accruing regardless of students’ ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.  In the course of this class, participants will read, discuss and see the information that many researchers have discovered. Classes are re-evaluated every two years to determine if they are still valid.

ELITE (Expanding Literacy Instruction by Tutoring ELLs)

July 7th - July 11th - 9:00am-3:00pm

Project ELITE (Expanding Literacy Instruction by Tutoring ELLs) – This course focuses on literacy training for educators, providing individualized instruction to English language learners who need additional literacy support. The focus is on reading comprehension and oral language development to help ELLs participate on equal terms in the classroom as they confront the dual challenge of mastering grade-level content while continuing to learn English. ELITE (Expanding Literacy Instruction by Tutoring ELLs) is based on the highly effective literacy intervention research by Diane August and reported by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute for Educational Sciences and the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Thinking Math 6-8 - Journey to Algebra

July 14th - July 18th - 9:00am-3:00pm

This course is centered on fractions, decimals, ratios, percents and assessment issues for rational numbers. Like all Thinking Math courses, Thinking Math Journey to Algebra focuses on the situational context of word problems. The course stresses the understanding and recording of student thinking, balancing conceptual and procedure learning, and mathematical justification. This course has no prerequisite. Thinking Math courses can be taken in any order and the content can be transferred to other grades and content areas.

English as a New Language 101

July 21st - July 25th - 9:00am-3:00pm

This course is designed for K-12 mainstream or general education teachers and paraprofessionals of English language learners who have little to no information or preparation to work with this rapidly growing population of students. There are four sections (modules) that will include research-based information on second-language acquisition; information about the cultural, academic, and linguistic diversity of ELLs, and a range of strategies and skills to differentiate instruction for ELLs while maintaining academic rigor.

Managing Student Behaviors

July 28th - August 1st - 9:00am-3:00pm

The anti-social actions of a small but powerful number of students in school not only put their own academic success at risk but threaten the learning environment for everyone. This course presents research on emotional and behavioral problems of students who consistently act out. Participants will learn strategies to reduce and/or prevent the occurrence of disruptive or dangerous outbreaks.
