D128 Teachers Vote NO CONFIDENCE in Superintendent Herrmann

Teachers and parents will attend school board meeting TONIGHT at 7PM at Vernon Hills HS to call for her dismissal

LAKE COUNTY, IL – The 293 teachers who are members of the D128 Federation of Teachers have overwhelmingly voted NO CONFIDENCE in the leadership of Dr. Denise Herrmann, superintendent of Community High School District 128. Nearly 90% of members approved the resolution.

“As educators committed to positive change and growth in our award-winning district, our members know that effective leadership is critical to student success,” said Monica Caldicott, a 20-year library media specialist at Vernon Hills High School and president of the D128 Federation of Teachers. “During her nearly three-year tenure here, Dr. Denise Herrmann has repeatedly shown that she is incapable of leading our district at this important time. Our students, parents, and taxpayers deserve much better, so we took this important vote to make our voices heard and urge the school board to take action.”

District 128 serves more than 3,200 students at Libertyville and Vernon Hills High Schools. Along with the teachers, parents have expressed growing concern on social media about Dr. Herrmann’s poor performance.

In their resolution, the teachers cite Dr. Herrmann for:

  • Poor use of taxpayer funds
  • Eliminating effective student supports
  • An inability to set and follow through on district goals
  • Creating a chaotic and hostile work environment and forcing key administrators to leave the district
  • Repeatedly violating the collective bargaining agreement between the district and union
  • Refusing to communicate and collaborate honestly and transparently with teachers.

“As the district leader, our superintendent must put the needs of students above all else. By not properly identifying and planning to support students and the teachers and staff who serve them, Dr. Herrmann has failed to fulfill her main responsibility. At the same time, she has created an environment of distrust and disrespect,” said Caldicott.

Union members and concerned parents will attend the Dist. 128 Board of Education meeting tonight (Monday, 5/20) at 7 PM at Vernon Hills High School to officially announce their “No Confidence” vote and call on board members to immediately dismiss Dr. Herrmann.

“As teachers, we feel responsible to our students, parents, and taxpayers,” Caldicott added. “They deserve a superintendent who will make prudent financial decisions and build upon the outstanding legacy and student achievement in our district. Dr. Herrmann has proven she is not that leader. It’s time for change in District 128.”

A summary of the union’s resolution is available here.
