Waukegan Paraprofessionals are celebrating a major victory after Waukegan District 60’s plan to lay paraprofessionals was successfully halted.

Waukegan Paraprofessional Council Leaders, Samuel Thomas and Olga Colon and IFT Field Service Director, Cameron Mauricio (formerly Sweeney) fought to protect the jobs of dedicated paraprofessionals who provide critical support to students throughout the district. When the district announced its intention to eliminate more than 50 positions, union leaders mobilized, advocated, and pushed for a solution that would preserve jobs and maintain support for students.

Their efforts paid off.

Last week, the parties reached an agreement that ensures zero layoffs, protecting more union jobs and providing stability for paraprofessionals, students, and families.

This victory demonstrates what can be accomplished when union members stand together, organize, and fight for the resources schools need to succeed. By working collectively and advocating relentlessly, Waukegan paraprofessionals secured a result that benefits both employees and the students they serve every day.
