I hereby post a part-time vacancy for an Office Support Staff position.  The start date is on or about April 15, 2024.  Job qualifications and essential duties and responsibilities for this position are listed in the attached job description.  Those interested in the above listed position should understand that:

  1. Application is made by sending a cover letter and current resume to the attention of Heather Heiden by e-mail to membership@lcft.org no later than Monday, March 11, 2024;
  2. LCFT does not pay the cost of any expense incurred in the interview process, or any expense incurred in relocation when employment requires a change in residency;
  3. Interviewees will be selected from the application letters with current resumes received by the deadline date;
  4. Interviews and skills testing will be conducted in the Gurnee Office;
  5. Employment will begin as per a mutual agreement between the successful applicant and the LCFT Executive Committee;
  6. The salary is $26.00 per hour and does not receive any benefits, and is not part of the IFT support staff bargaining unit;

Part-Time Office Support Staff

Why We Do This Work:

The Lake County Federation of Teachers (LCFT) Local 504 represents over 5,500 educational workers in Lake County, Illinois. LCFT members include elementary and secondary teachers, school-related personnel including paraprofessional and teaching assistants, clerks, secretaries, food service workers, custodial and maintenance workers, and bus drivers, as well as higher education faculty and staff. Our federated Local consists of thirty-one councils located throughout Lake County.

The LCFT is a Local of the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT), which is a state federation of the American Federation of Teachers, a national labor union of more than 1 million education professionals, public employees and health professionals headquartered in Washington D.C. The LCFT/IFT/AFT are affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

We share the common goal of the Illinois Federation of Teachers-to improve public education and public services for Illinois students and citizens. To improve public education, we recognize that it is important to protect the rights guaranteed to our members by their individual contracts, as well as to ensure that our members receive fair and just treatment in the workplace. Our goal is to empower our members to take an active role in their workplace and their profession. Beyond the protection of our members, we are involved in the professional development of our members, offering courses designed to increase their knowledge and experiences. Our members are also actively engaged in the support of legislative measures designed to benefit the educational system on a local, state and national level.

Qualifications:

  1. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills required along with a professional demeanor when interacting with colleagues, members, and guests.
  2. Ability to plan, organize, schedule, and manage workflow in a timely and effective manner.
  3. Proficiency with and experience in the Microsoft Windows and Office Suite environment, with advanced knowledge of Excel. Regular engagement with email and calendar systems, remote meeting software and web-based applications, and the ability to learn our proprietary data management system.
  4. Demonstration of effective and efficient proficiency through an appropriately scored MS Windows and Office skills exam.
  5. Assists staff and end users with web-based internet voting solutions.
  6. Demonstrated ability to multitask effectively and prioritize strategically.
  7. Ability to attend to minute details to ensure reliable and accurate results with a strong focus on verification of information for accuracy.
  8. Ability to interact collaboratively with union leadership, membership, field representatives, outside agencies, and central office staff.
  9. Ability to prioritize and work independently with minimal supervision and follow oral and written instructions.
  10. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds on a periodic basis.
  11. Must be flexible in work schedule as the number of hours per week will be determined on an as-needed basis, no less than 2 weeks in advance. Peak work periods may be during the summer and September to December.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Shall support and assist the Membership Secretary and Office Manager with tasks as they determine necessary.
  2. Work with diverse groups of individuals and demonstrate a positive attitude.
  3. Handle multiple tasks and projects, with the ability to be flexible in working on priorities for the Local.
  4. Work independently and effectively with minimal supervision.
  5. Will answer phones, doors and check voicemail, routing as necessary.
  6. Demonstrate superior computer skills and software knowledge, including high level knowledge of and the ability to use word processing, database, and spreadsheet programs.
  7. Perform a wide variety of secretarial, clerical, and record keeping functions from basic (answer phone and route messages) to complex (data matching and analysis) which are necessary for the efficient operations and accurate record keeping of LCFT.
  8. Assist in processing and reconciling all membership applications, maintaining detailed files of such and work with School District Personnel and Council Leadership in maintaining accurate membership list.
  9. Will perform records management duties on behalf of all Councils, including periodically moving boxes from the Local to our offsite storage facility.
  10. Assist the Local in developing a records management process.
  11. Act as a liaison between the Local, Council, and State Leaders and Membership in such a manner to present a positive image and superior customer service.
  12. Maintain all files and records in a legible, accurate, and organized manner.
  13. Schedule facility for workshops, training, membership meetings and rentals, etc.
  14. Assist in the preparation and execution of other activities supporting LCFT and the membership. Includes but not limited to assisting in loading coolers and pop machines, and rearranging meeting spaces in an emergency.
  15. Will work with others in preparing membership materials for distribution.
  16. Attend all training necessary to learn new technologies and improve the skill set as requested.
  17. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Organization Relationship:

Position is under the employ of the Lake County Federation Governing Board. The position will report to the Office Manager, under the direction of the Local President or designee.

This position is part-time and may work 2-5 days a week, Monday through Friday and will include variable work hours between 7:30 am to 5:00 p.m. No benefits shall apply. The position will not be required to work the week of Spring Break, the week of 4th of July and two weeks during the Winter Holidays, as set by the LCFT Executive Committee. The position is not part of the IFT support staff bargaining unit.
