AFT Convention News--Day 3

Posted On: Jul 14, 2008 (12:59:28)
Sunday brought with it a flurry of activity for the LCFT delegates to the AFT convetnion.  There were many resolutions debated on the floor, but the biggest one was the special order of business officially endorsing Senator Barack Obama as our candidate for President of the United States.  Senator Obama addressed the AFT membership via satellite, thanking members for the endorsement and laying out his plan for education--he plans to listen to the teachers and education professionals for their ideas regarding how to fix our schools.  In addition to the visit from Senator Obama, special orders of business named retiring AFT officers Ed McElroy and Nat LaCoeur President Emeritus and Secretary-Treasurer Emertius, respectively.  The delegates also saw a video on the disturbing plight of the teachers in Zimbabawe, and pledged to stand in solidarity with them.  Finally, delegates voted for the new AFT leaders before leaving the convention for the day.
AFT Convention News-Day 2

Posted On: Jul 13, 2008 (10:03:34)

It was a rainy Saturday, but that didn't stop the members of the LCFT delegation from taking care of the work of the Union yesterday at Navy Pier.  The morning session was an exciting one, with visits from Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, and the featured speaker of the morning, New York Senator Hillary Clinton.  Clinton's message revolved around two themes: thanks and support.  She thanked the AFT for their support throughout her bid to become the Democratic Nominee for President, and then asked everyone to throw their support behind Barack Obama.  The rest of the morning was focused on getting the business of the Union done, and many resolutions were debated and approved.  The delegates broke for lunch, and then returned to more resolutions and a celebration of the organizing efforts of the AFT.  Finally, a rally was held in support of the workers of the Resurrection Hospital, whose attempts to Unionize have been brutally rebuffed, leading up to the firing of one Union worker.

Senator Obama is expected to address the convention via satellite on Sunday.

AFT Convention News

The LCFT delegation had a great day at convention yesterday.  The convention opened to a rousing performance by the Chicago Military Academy's drum corps, and warm wishes from convention chairs Marilyn Stewart, CTU president, and Ed Geppert, IFT president.  Delegates were treated to a video on AFT's philanthropic efforts, a wonderful speaker from the Special Olympics, and the final opening speech of AFT president Ed McElroy.  McElroy praised AFT members for their efforts over the past two years, and encouraged members to stay the course--keep fighting for Union rights.  The evening included a delegate reception at Navy Pier where a great time was had by all!  Keep checking lcft.org for more updates or link to the AFT's website at www.aft.org/convention/index.htm

Help offered for teachers seeking National Board certification

Posted On: Apr 16, 2008 (11:13:03)

Successful completion of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) earns teachers a Master Certificate, the highest level of certification for Illinois educators. The state of Illinois wants to see more national board-certified educators among the teaching ranks, so the state supports a pool of candidates with a $2,000 subsidy to cover the NBPTS candidate fee. Teachers can apply for the subsidy from now until June 15, 2008.  For more information, go to the National Board Resource Center on the Illinois State University website.  The site, designed to help recruit and support Illinois teachers who want to enter the NBPTS process, offers information, application forms, contacts with other NBPTS teachers, information sessions and more.
